Protests by divorced parents against German justice Berlin. Three fathers and one grandmother have confirmed on Wednesday July 11th that they have begun a hunger strike, considering themselves the victims of the German system of justice in divorce cases, some of them with partners of different nationalities. On the Gendarmenmarkt, in Berlin, the four hunger strikers have come with photos of their children, saying they have not seen them for months and even years. The German legal system had been strongly criticized in France in 1998 when it decided - provisionally - not to repatriate a child abducted by his German father in France, in contravention of the Hague Convention, by invoking the best interest of the child. At this time, no cases of child abduction are supposed to exist, but only judgments which are either emotionally damaging or non-implemented. A commission composed of six French and German MPs, created in 1999, is attempting to mediate between German and French parents who are tearing themselves apart for their children. (corresp.)
